The Bid’a (Innovation) In Islam

Allah swt says in Qur’an
1) “Say (O Muhammad to mankind): ‘If you (really) love Allah, then follow me (i.e. accept Islamic Monotheism, follow the Qur’an and the Sunnah), Allah will love you and forgive you your sins’.” [The Holy Quran, Surah al 'Imran 3:31]

2) “Follow what has been sent down unto you from your Lord (the Qur’an and Prophet Muhammad’s Sunnah), and follow not any Awliya’ (protectors and helpers who order you to associate partners in worship with Allah), besides Him (Allah). Little do you remember!” [The Holy Quran, Surah al-A'raf 7:3]

3) One day as The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) sat with his companions, he drew a straight line in the dirt, he then drew a series of line branching off from either side of it. When the companions aasked him what it meant, … he recited the following verse: “And verily, this is my straight path, so follow it, and follow not (other) paths, for they will separate you away from His (Allah’s) path.” [
The Holy Quran, Surah al-A'nam 6:153] (Reported by Ibn Masood and collected by Nasai, Ahmad, and Darimi)

4) And the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “The most truthful of speech is the Book of Allah and the best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad, and the most evil of things are those which are newly-invented.” And he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever innovates anything in this matter of ours (i.e., Islam), that is not part of it will have it rejected.” (Narrated by al-Bukhari, no. 2697; Muslim)

5) According to a version narrated by Muslim, “Whoever doe anything that is not in accordance with this matter of ours (i.e., Islam), will have it rejected.”

6) Ibn e umar (r.a) said: Every innovation is an astray even if people understands it good.

15) Imaam al-Barbahaaree (rahima-hullaah) mentions: ((The innovators are like scorpions. They bury their heads and bodies in the sand and leave their tails out. When they get the chance they sting; the same with the innovators who conceal themselves amongst the people, when they are able, they do what they desire)). 20) Imaam ash-Shaafi’ee (rahima-hullaah) said: The Sunnahs of the Messenger of Allaah (sal-Allaahu ‘alayhe wa sallam) reach, as well as escape from every one of us. So whenever I voice my opinion, or formulate a principle, where something contrary to my view exists on the authority of the Messenger of Allaah (sal-Allaahu ‘alayhe wa sallam), then the correct view is what the Messenger of Allaah (sal-Allaahu ‘alayhe wa sallam) has said, and it (that) is my view. “Whoever thinks that there is such thing as a good innovation in Islam, has accused the Prophetصلى الله عليه و سلم of treachery because Allah said “This day I have perfected your religion…”. So what was not religion then, is not religion today” (Al-‘Itisaam as-Shaatibi 1/38)

The Story of Shatan

Day of Judgment – when we are all made to account for what we had done in this life, we won’t be
able to blame Satan for the bad deeds that we did because of how he had incited us. Rather, this is what Satan will say on the Day of Judgment (as Allah tells us in the Quran):

“And Shaitan (Satan) will say when the matter has been decided: ‘Verily, Allah promised you a promise of truth. And I too promised you, but I betrayed you. I had no authority over you except that I called you, and you responded to me. So blame me not, but blame yourselves. I cannot help you, nor can you help me. I deny your former act in associating me (Satan) as a partner with Allah (by obeying me in the life of the world). Verily, there is a painful torment for the Zaalimoon (polytheists and wrongdoers)’” (Quran, Ibraaheem: 22).

There’s much to ponder about in this verse. Here are the key points:

Satan knows the real truth of Allah’s message. We know this because he will say, “Verily, Allah promised you a promise of truth…” He will continue to say later, “I deny your former act in associating me (Satan) as a partner with Allah (by obeying me in the life of the world).”
Satan will mock us by pushing the burden back on us. He would say, “…I called you, and you responded to me…”
Satan would not even accept the blame and instead will put the blame on us. He would say, “…So blame me not, but blame yourselves…”
The remedy – ways to protect ourselves

In spite of all the tactics that Satan uses to mislead mankind, he is not able to hurt those of Allah’s slaves who are aware of Satan’s tactics, and use their defenses provided them by Allah to ward off those tactics. Allah says in the Quran:

"(Iblis (Satan)) said: ‘By Your Might, then I will surely mislead them all. Except Your chosen slaves amongst them (i.e. faithful, obedient, true believers of Islamic Monotheism).’” (Quran, Saad: 82-83).

Allah said to Satan:

"Certainly, you shall have no authority over My slaves, except those who follow you of the Ghawun (Mushrikun and those who go astray, criminals, polytheists, and evil-doers)” (Quran, Al-Hijr: 42).

The following are some of the defenses that we can use to keep Satan from exerting his influence over us.

Ignore Satanic whispers (waswaas) – One of the effective ways to ignore Satanic whispers is to first be aware of them and then once recognized, to ignore them. So, we should be quick to recognize that when we feel being driven by our temptations to do bad or succumb to a feeling of laziness or procrastination to do good, we should ignore that waswaas. It is worth quoting here what Ibn Hajar al-Haythami (may Allah have mercy on him) said about dealing with waswasah in his book al-Fataawa al-Fiqhiyyah al-Kubra (1/149). This is what he said: “He was asked about the problem of waswasah (insinuating whispers from the Shaitan), and whether there is a remedy for it. He replied that there is an effective remedy for it, which is to ignore them completely, no matter how frequently they may come to mind. When these whispers are ignored, they do not become established; rather they go away after a short time, as many people have experienced. But for those who pay attention to them and act upon them, they increase until they make him like one who is insane or even worse, as we see among many of those who have suffered from them and paid attention to them and to the devil whose task it is to insinuate these whispers, whom the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) warned us against…, as was explained in Sharh Mishkaat al-Anwaar.

In al-Saheehayn there is a report which supports what has been mentioned above, which is that whoever suffers from waswaas should seek refuge with Allah and turn away from the waswaas. So think about this effective remedy which was taught by the one who does not speak of his own whims and desires to his ummah, and understand that whoever is deprived of this is deprived of all goodness, because waswasah comes from Satan, according to scholarly consensus, and Satan has no other desire than to make the believers go astray, make them confused, make their life a misery, and cause them distress to the extent that they leave Islam without realizing it.

Faith and Trust in Allah – Allah says in the Holy Quran: "Verily! He (Satan) has no power over those who believe and put their trust only in their Lord (Allah)" (Quran, An-Nahl: 99). The message, therefore, is clear and that is to direct our attention not to what works in helping Satan in his goals but to do what our Creator wants for us. Allah says in the Holy Quran: "And whoever fears Allah and keeps his duty to Him, He will make a way for him to get out (of every difficulty). And he will provide him from (sources) he never could imagine" (Quran, At-Talaq: 2-3).

Fearing Allah and not His Creation – Another weapon used by Satan is that of inducing fear in the hearts of weak human beings. He tries to frighten the believers with apprehension of various consequences and difficulties in following the Straight Path. Allah tells us in the Quran: “Shaitan (Satan) threatens you with poverty and orders you to commit Fahsha (evil deeds, sins, illegal sexual activities, etc.) whereas Allah promises you forgiveness from Himself and Bounty, and Allah is All-Sufficient for His creature’s needs, All-Knower” (Quran, al-Baqarah: 268).

Allah warns us that one of Satan’s tactics is to make us fear His creation. He says in the Quran: "It is only Shaitan (Satan) that suggests to you the fear of his Auliya’ (supporters and friends (polytheists, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah and in His Messenger Muhammad); so fear them not, but fear Me, if you are (true) believers" (Quran, Aal-e-Imran: 175).

Recite Dhikr – We should use Allah’s remembrance (Dhikr-Allah) to ward off waswaas. Al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said that “…when the Shaitan hears dhikr (remembrance of Allah) he slinks away, and Laa ilaaha ill-Allah is the best of dhikr, and the most effective remedy for warding off waswasah is to remember Allah a great deal.”

Obtaining Islamic knowledge (from the Right Sources) –Taking heed of Satan’s ways and becoming aware of his plans and goal can help us to be alert to his influence or persuasion and keep our defenses up. For this, it is essential to acquire Islamic knowledge from the right sources. It is very difficult for Satan to approach those dedicated to learning. Let us reflect upon what Imam Shafai said:
"All humans are dead except those who have knowledge; and all those who have knowledge are asleep except those who do good deeds; and those who do good deeds are deceived except those who are sincere; and those who are sincere are always in a state of worry."

Taking refuge and shelter in Allah – Allah says in the Holy Quran: "And if an evil whisper comes to you from Shaitan (Satan), then seek refuge with Allah. Verily, He is All-Hearer, All-Knower" (Quran, Al-Aaraf: 200). One of the other ways to seek refuge from Satan is to recite the last two chapters of the Holy Quran, namely Surat Al-Falaq (The Daybreak) and Surat An-Nas (Mankind), by supplicating for Allah’s Protection, and seeking the Most Merciful’s forgiveness for one’s sins constantly.

Being thankful to Allah for the gift of Eeman and seeking His Protection for it – Let us remember that the confidence Satan expressed in his success to mislead people, stems from his assurance that most people are ungrateful to their Creator, Lord and Master Allah the All Mighty. Allah says in the Quran that Satan claimed: “. . . and You will not find most of them as thankful ones (i.e. they will not be dutiful to You).” (Quran, Al-Aaraf: 17). It is, therefore, man’s ingratitude to Allah that Satan banks upon in getting man off track. So one of the antidotes to Satanic whispers is to be in a state of constant consciousness of Allah (SWT), and thankfulness for all His Blessings upon us.

To conclude, as and when we fall to our temptations to commit the wrong, let’s remind ourselves that even Satan knows the truth, yet he is determined to make us earn Allah’s anger. However, at the end – on the Day of Judgment – he will simply say, “…So blame me not, but blame yourselves…”

Abulution (Wudu) Is Half Of Eeman (Faith)

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
"Wudu' is half the Iman." [Muslim].
Humran, the freed slave of Uthman
reported: One day Uthman b. Affan
performed the ablution well, and then said: I saw Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) perform ablution, the best ablution, and then observed: He who performed ablution like this and then went towards the mosque and nothing (but the love of) prayer urged him (to do so), all his previous (minor) sins would be expiated. [Muslim] Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "When a Muslim, or a believer, washes his face (in the course of Wudu'), every sin which he committed with his eyes, will be washed away from his face with water, or with the last drop of
water; when he washes his hands, every sin which is committed by his hands will be effaced from his hands with the water, or with the last drop of water; and when he washes his feet, every sin his feet committed will be washed away with the water, or with the last drop of water; until he finally emerges cleansed of all his sins." [Muslim] Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard my Khalil (the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)) as saying, "The adornment of the believer (in Jannah) will reach the places where the water of Wudu' reaches (his body)." [Muslim] Aishah (May Allah be pleased with her) reported: The Messenger of Allah
(ﷺ) said, "There are ten demands of
pure nature: trimming the moustache, letting the beard grow, using Miswak (tooth-stick), snuffing up water into the nose (in ablution), paring the nails, washing the bases of the finger joints; plucking the underarm hair, removing of the pubic hair and removing impurities with water from the affected part after a call of nature." [Muslim] Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: We used to prepare for
the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) a Miswak
(tooth-stick) and the water for making Wudu'. Whenever Allah wished to awaken him from sleep at night, he (ﷺ) would brush his teeth with Miswak, make Wudu', and perform Salat. [Muslim]. Allah will reward you for gaining knowledge and learning about Islam so we all get rewarded and the unknown benefits, Allah knows bests what that would be. let pray its jannah. Ameen. But those who hold fast to the Book and establish prayer - indeed, We will not allow to be lost the reward of the reformers. Surat Al Araf [7:170]

How Does the Iman Increase and Decrease?

Every child is born knowing that his or her Lord is Only One, Allah, regardless of what faith his or her parents may practice. But just
because a child is born with this fitra, or natural belief, does not necessarily mean that the child will grow up to be what truly makes a person Muslim, which is ones iman. A Muslim must have belief and iman in the following:

1) One must belief in Allah as One God without any partners and without denying His Names and Attributes and without directing any form of worship to any other than Allah.

2) One must believe in all of Allahs noble angels without doubt and without associating any non-Islamic belief regarding them, such as them being females or human-like.

3) To be considered a believer, one must have faith in all of Allahs chosen messengers and prophets, named and unnamed without attributing to them any falsehoods or flaws.

4) One must have faith in the Divine Scriptures, but taking only the Quran as the one true guidance, preserved by Allah for all of eternity and for all of mankind.

5) One of the most important beliefs, which illustrates the purpose of life, is the belief in the Hereafter without denying any of the events told in the Quran or by the Prophet (sallallahu alaiyhi wa sallam).

6) Finally, one must believe in Divine Preordainment, more commonly known as fate or destiny. One must believe that Allah has knowledge of the future and that everything has been preordained with its due measure.

When a person accepts the above beliefs with his heart and affirms it with his tongue, he is considered as one who has iman. Iman requires acknowledgement of these beliefs through action. The Quran constantly connects ones iman with ones deeds in the phrase, Innalladhina amanu wa amilussaalihaat, which translates to those who believe and do good deeds. It is the actions a person chooses to do that both increase the iman and act as evidence of ones iman or decreases it and proves the weakness of the iman.
The Holy Prophet (sallallahu alaiyhi wa sallam) said, Iman wears out in ones heart just as the clothes (one wears) wears out. Therefore, ask Allah to renew iman in your hearts. Unfortunately, iman will not increase by only making dua and asking Allah to increase it, but it also takes effort from the believer. Allah states:

Lo! Allah does not change the condition of a people until they (first) change that which is in their hearts. (Surat ar-Rad 13:11)

There are three main causes for the decrease in ones iman. A persons iman is sure to take a fall when he loses certainty in the above six beliefs. These beliefs when properly settled into the heart play an important role in a believers life. When a person says, performs, or believes something, which is Islamically known as kufr (disbelief), their iman will be effected in a very negative way. And the final reason for the downfall of iman is performing any type of shirk. These three things all lead to sin, which is what prevents the iman from increasing.

It is a duty of every Muslim to keep his or her iman in check. This means one must constantly guard his or her iman and observe whether it has increased or decreased and for what causes. If it has decreased, one must work to increase it before it falls low enough to destroy the heart. There are many ways to increases ones iman and it involves increasing in righteous deeds and refraining from sins, as well as staying away from sinful activities and people who encourage such activities.

The first thing one should do is renew his or her faith by reciting La ilaha illallah, the meaning of which is: There is no deity except Allah, as the Prophet (sallallahu alaiyhi wa sallam) advised. A person must also believe in all the aspects of La ilaha illallah and this is done through gaining knowledge. Knowledge is one of the most essential key factors in increasing ones iman. It leads to certainty in the heart, assurance in the mind, and peace felt by the soul. Allah has said in His Holy Revelation:

It is only those who have knowledge among His slaves that fear Allah. (Surat al-Malaaikah 35:28)

An increase in knowledge leads to acknowledging Allah in every moment of ones life through taqwa, which leads to a firm iman. The type of knowledge we are discussing is knowing that Allah is One and has no partners, wives, children, or equals. It is knowing Allah through His beautiful Names and Attributes; that Allah is the Creator of the heavens and the earth and all that it contains. He is the Preserver, as well as the One Who destroys. He gives life and takes it whenever He wills. His knowledge encompasses all things and nothing can ever be hidden from Him.

And with Him are the keys of the invisible. None but He knows them. And He knows what is in the land and the sea. Not a leaf falls but He knows it, not a grain amid the darkness of the earth, nor anything wet or dry but (it is noted) in a Clear Record. (Surat al-Anaam 6:59)

He hears the cries of His servants all at once and is not confused by the countless different number of voices and languages and He is Ever Responding. He is the Compassionate, the Merciful, the Giver of Bounties. He forgives whomever He wills and punishes whomever He wills. He is the Just, the Merciful, and does no wrong to His creation. He sees all things. Not a black ant on a black stone on a black moonless night is hidden from His sight. To Him belongs all praise and glory! He is the Most Great, the Incomparable!

A person who has knowledge of Allah is no way like a person who simply states La ilaha illallah and knows nothing else about its meaning and its impact in the life of a true believer.

Likewise, a person who has knowledge about Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alaiyhi wa sallam) and his life, noble characteristics, truthful teachings, and exemplary actions and has faith in what he informed his Ummah concerning the torment and bliss in the grave, the Last Day, the Reckoning, the questioning of ones deeds, the scale, the bridge, the rewards of Paradise, and the torments of Hellfire is unlike the person who has no such knowledge or belief. A person with this knowledge will have a purpose and goal in life, which is to obey Allah to the best of his ability and remind himself of the rewards and punishments he may earn depending upon his iman and his deeds.

There is no doubt that knowledge plays a big role in increasing the iman of a weak heart and Allah says it beautifully:

Are those who know, equal to those who know not? (Surat az-Zumar 39:9)

The second key factor, which affects the iman are ones deeds. They can either decrease the iman and weaken the heart and soul or increase it, as well as strengthening the heart and soul. Once a person gains knowledge about something, he should accept it and put it into practice. If a person accepts the forbidden as forbidden and the permissible as permissible, but refuses to act upon it, thereby disobeying Allah and committing sin, not to mention hurting his own soul, he has suppressed his iman. The basis of iman is to accept and practice.

By increasing good deeds and obedience, one nears himself to Allah, increases his iman, and purifies himself. He is less likely to fall into his base desires and worldly pleasures, keeping himself safe from the evils of society by strengthening his soul and weakening his nafs.

A person with low iman should begin by performing the obligatory duties imposed on him, such as performing the five daily prayers at their fixed times and fasting. He should stop committing major sins and eventually begin performing more voluntary and permissible acts of worship and obedience and refrain from minor sins and disliked acts to the best of his ability. When a person refrains from as many sins as possible and does as many good deeds as he can, most importantly his obligatory duties, he weakens Satan against him, which gives him a bigger chance of success. Allah says:

O you who believe! Obey Allah and obey the Messenger and do not make your deeds vain. (Surah Muhammad 47:33)

One should make sure that everything he does will only benefit him both in this world and in the hereafter. There is no point in doing something that will cause hurt to ones soul and add more weight to ones evil deeds. It is very important and beneficial to follow the Sunnah. The Prophet (sallallahu alaiyhi wa sallam) was the best of mankind and Allah chose him to show us our ways. If we follow him, we are sure to succeed in both worlds, Insha Allah. But if we reject his way and follow our own lusts or the way of the kuffar, we will only destroy ourselves. To be sure that ones deeds will increase the iman, one should do only that which Allah and His Messenger (sallallahu alaiyhi wa sallam) have taught and in that way, one can be safe from bidah and misguidance.

The third key factor to increasing ones iman is remembrance and contemplation. Remembrance refers to the remembrance of Allah, His Names and Attributes, His Greatness, Power, and Majesty, and the fact that He is the Most High. He is the Only One Who deserves to be worshipped, thanked, and depended upon. Allah is the Lord of Kindness and the Most Generous. He should be praised and glorified constantly as a part of remembrance. The Prophet (sallallahu alaiyhi wa sallam) said that the most beloved and weighty phrases of dhikr
(remembrance) are La ilaha illallah Subhannallah, Alhumdulillah, and Allahu Akbar. There are many others like these, which should also be recited. The Prophet (sallallahu alaiyhi wa sallam) said, The difference between a person who glorifies his Lord and the one who does not remember his Lord is like that between the living and the dead. The remembrance of Allah increases iman and brings peace into the heart. There is none more truthful than Allah in speech and so Allah confirms:

Who have believed and whose hearts have rest in the remembrance of Allah. Verily in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest! (Surat ar-Rad 13:28)

Along with praising and glorifying Allah, one should be regular in reciting His
Holy Speech, the Quran, and ponder upon their meanings and use them as a guide and a healing in ones life.

And we reveal of the Quran that which is a healing and a mercy to those who believe(Surat al-Isra 17:82)

The Quran contains the Truth about monotheism, Allahs promises of success to the true believers and warnings of punishment to the hypocrites and disbelievers. It contains commandments and prohibitions, inspiring stories of the previous prophets and their nations, and codes of the best conduct and behavior. The words of the Quran bring hope into a persons life. They enlighten the heart and open up a path of righteousness for those searching for the truth.

Will they not then ponder on the Qur'an? If it had been from other than Allah they would have found therein much incongruity. (Surat an-Nisaa 4:82)

The iman will increase when one connects with Allah through His Holy Revelation and this should lead one to acting upon his Lords Word.

They only are the (true) believers whose hearts feel fear when Allah is mentioned, and when the revelations of Allah are recited unto them they increase their faith, and who trust in their Lord. (Surat Al-Anfaal 8:2)

Remembering the Hereafter is also a cure for weak iman. When one is one hundred percent certain of the Last Day, Paradise, and Hellfire and feels fear of the mere thought of standing before the All-Powerful Creator and be questioned and judged for each of his thoughts, sayings and deeds, he is bound to think twice before committing an act of disobedience. One should remember the Day of Judgement often, which is repeatedly mentioned in the Quran to remind mankind that he will surely be returned to his Lord.

When we look at the night, full of bright glittery stars, the shining moon and the sunset, as well as the mountains standing firm and the flowers blooming, we should feel Allahs Power and Majesty and contemplate over His creation. It is absolutely amazing and unimaginable as to how Allah created every single thing in existence and how the universe runs so smoothly by the will and control of its Creator. Contemplating over the creation is another way a person can increase his iman and grow closer to Allah.

Such as remember Allah, standing, sitting, and reclining, and consider the creation of the heavens and the earth, (and say): Our Lord! You created not this in vain. Glory be to You! Preserve us from the doom of Fire. (Surah Ali Imran 3:191)

Abu Hurairah (radiyallahu anhu) reported that the Prophet (sallallahu alaiyhi wa sallam) said, Allah, the All-Mighty says, I treat my slave according to his expectations from Me and I am with him when he remembers Me. If he remembers Me in his heart, I remember him in My heart. If he remembers Me in a gathering, I remember him in a better and more noble gathering (i.e. of the angels). If he comes close to Me by one span, I go towards him a cubits length. If he comes toward Me a cubits length, I go towards him an arms length. And if he walks toward Me, I run toward him.

One of the most important things a person should be aware of when trying to increase his iman and at all times, is the vastness of Allahs mercy, compassion, and love. One should put hope and trust in Him. Remembrance of Allah is a key factor in increasing the iman, as are increasing ones Islamic knowledge and good deeds. Allah says:

Then, as for those who have faith and do good deeds, He will pay them fully their rewards and give them more out of His grace and as for those who disdain and are proud, He will punish them with a painful doom. And they shall not find for themselves besides Allah any guardian or helper. (Surat an-Nisaa 4:173)

In the following verse, Allah emphasizes the importance of iman and doing good deeds along with ones belief:

There shall be no sin unto those who believe and do good deeds for what they may have eaten (in the past); so be mindful of your duty (to Allah) and do good deeds and again be mindful of your duty and believe and once again, be mindful of your duty and do good deeds. Allah loves the good! (Surat al-Maidah 5:93)

The life of the dunya is only a test for the creation and one day this test will end. It is the responsibility of each human and jinn to prepare oneself for the final scoring of the test by being mindful of ones duty towards Allah by following the guidance of the Quran and the Sunnah and keeping ones iman high. A weak iman will lead one to the Hellfire, while a strong one will lead one to the Gardens of Delight. The reason is because it is the iman that determines the actions of a person. A person with weak or even no iman will commit sin and cause Allah to be displeased, causing him to be thrown into the Hellfire to be punished. But a person with a strong faith will refrain from sins and perform good deeds, which will be the cause of Allahs pleasure and his entrance into Paradise.

In conclusion, Shaykh Muhammad Salih al-Munajjid wrote in his book, Some of our righteous Salaf said, It is a sign of the slaves fiqh (knowledge of the religion) that he concerns himself with enhancing the status of his iman when it experiences a decrease. Also, it is a sign of the slaves fiqh to know if his iman is on the increase or the decrease. Furthermore, it is a sign of ones fiqh that he knows why and where the evil whispers of Satan are coming from.

THE REALITY OF TAQWA

A person once asked the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaiyhi wa sallam), "O Messenger of Allah! Give me some advice." The Prophet (sallallahu alaiyhi wa sallam) replied, "I advise you to fear Allah because it is the head of everything."

This is taqwa--having fear of the Majestic, the All-Mighty, Most High, Most Exalted, the One Creator, the Supreme Power.

Muhammad (sallallahu alaiyhi wa sallam) said, "Have fear of Allah, it is the head of everything." But to have fear of Allah, we must attain God-consciousness, the awareness that Allah is deeply involved in every aspect of our lives, in our every action, in our every thought, in every spoken word. He
sees what we do hidden and what we do openly. He sees all that we do, whether it's intentional or unintentional, whether it's an evil, sinful act or a good, rewardful act. He hears all we say, whether we say it to someone's face, to ourselves, behind someone's back, or in our innermost thoughts. He is the Alive, the Eternal and He is closer to us than the vein in our neck (Suratul Qaaf 50:16).

The likeness of one who has the awareness of the reality of Allah's existence in every single act, every single decision, every single word, every single thought is the likeness of a dry, curled up desert plant that receives a drop of moisture, which will make it spread out its leaves and sink its roots and flourish and blossom. Similarly, one who feels Allah in their heart at every breath they take and in every aspect of their lives and in everything they do from the important and profound to the everyday, simple tasks becomes aware of the great thirst, the great dependence and the great joy his or her life had been lacking without this devotion, without this urge to serve. And with it they strive for the pleasure of their Lord, finding fulfillment and happiness.

Taqwa--fear of Allah. There was a time when this actually meant something. There was a time when Umar bin al-Khattaab (radiyallahu anhu) merely said a two-word khutbah. He said, "Ittaqullah!" Fear Allah! And with that he started the Jumu'ah prayer. But today, we are in a situation in which these two words alone will hold no weight as it did at the time of the Prophet (sallallahu alaiyhi wa sallam) and his companions (radiyallahu anhum). There was a time when fearing Allah, the One, the True, was a type of advice in which people did take heed, but today its means absolutely nothing to us. Instead of having fear of He, whose hands hold our very lives, instead of having fear of He who holds our destinies, instead of having fear of He who takes not our eyesight or our hearing or our ability to feel, but gives us thousands of chances daily to turn to Him, who do we fear? We fear our friends, our peer group. We fear them so much that we disobey that same God, who loves us so much that He forgives all our sins if only one tear falls from our eyes onto our cheeks. One tear! We go out with our friends, even our relatives, to make them happy and to fit in. We go to the movies, we go out partying at clubs and pubs committing sins and earning the displeasure of Allah and earning the pleasure of Shaytaan (Satan) for their sake. "Here just have a sip of this. It's not gonna do nothing," or, "Smoke a joint, man. What's wrong with you mama's boy?!?" or, "Come on, baby, just once if you really love me." These phrases might sound familiar to some of us. Instead of realizing that one day, on a day in which there is no doubt, we will be called up one by one to answer for every deed we committed and then either thrown into the Hellfire or welcomed into Paradise, we obey the disbelievers and the hypocrites (Muslims only by name):

"O Prophet! Keep your duty to Allah and obey not the disbelievers and the hypocrites. Verily, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise. And follow that which is inspired to you from your Lord. Verily, Allah is well aquainted with what you do. And put your trust in Allah and Sufficient is Allah as Trustee." (Suratul Ahzaab 33:1-3)

"How do you disbelieve in Allah when He gave you life when you were dead, then He will give you death, then life again, then unto Him you will return?" (Suratul Baqarah 2:28)

Instead of fearing the one who gave us life after we were dead, the One who bestows upon us food to keep our stomachs full, clothes to keep us warm, and houses to protect us, who do we fear? We fear our employers and our teachers. And because of fear of them, we choose not to worship that One, Powerful Lord at our prescribed times. We fear them?!?!? Them, who Allah, Himself created--created them as He created us, the believers, out of the dust of the earth?!? Yet, we fear them, who themselves will have no protects, no friends, no helpers, nor any interceders against Allah on the Day of Resurrection. Imagine, we make the choice not to worship the Lord of Kindness. And, in reality, we fear everything, but we fear not Allah, the Source of all Goodness.

"It is only Shaytaan that suggests to you the fear of his friends and supporters (disbelievers) so fear them not, but fear Me, if you are true believers." (Suratul Ali Imran 3:175)

"Truly, Allah is with those who fear Him, keep their duty to Him, and those who are doers of good for the sake of Allah only." (Suratul Nahl 16:128)

"Whoever fears Allah, Allah will grant him a way out of hardship; and whoever fears Allah and keeps his duty to Him, He will forgive his sins from him and will enlarge his reward." (Suratut-Talaq 65:2, 5)

"Verily, those who are fearful of Allah are the people who, when an evil thought from Shaytaan comes to them, they remember Allah, and indeed they then see aright." (Suratul A'raaf 7:20)

Once the fear and awareness of Allah dawns on a person, life is never the same. When a person's heart opens up to Allah, it cannot be. The way we view life, how we see life, our ambitions in life, our expectations in life, our goals in life, all change. After this, every aspect of life is seen with a spiritual and Islamic dimension. There is a reason, an aim, a goal to it all, a sense of justice and fulfillment, and a sense of a relationship with one's Creator, the Creator who is deeply involved with every action and thought of our lives.

"It is Allah Who gives life and death and Allah sees well all that you do." (Suratul Ali Imran 3:156)

"Truly my Lord casts (a mantle) of Truth (over His servants), He that has full knowledge of (all) that is hiddenIf I am astray it is only at the loss of my own soul; but if I receive guidance, it is because of the inspirations of my Lord to me; it is He Who hears all things and is ever near." (Suratus-Saba 34:48, 50)

This is why it is also important to realize that Islam is a way of life. It is not just a ritual of prayers, fasting, and feasting. Islam is the true deen, the Deen of Allah, a complete system of life and this life, the Islamic life, is to be lived the way Allah has prescribed it. And it starts with taqwa. Now, taqwa is more than just having fear of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.

Umar ibn Abdul Aziz (radiyallahu anhu) narrated: "Taqwa is not fasting during the day and it is not praying during the night and it is not the mixing of the two of them, but taqwa is leaving what Allah has made haram (forbidden) and by doing what Allah has made fard. After one has done this, Allah will provide good things for that person."

Al Hasan (radiyallahu anhu) reported: "The people who have taqwa (called al-muttaqeen) are the people who avoided whatever Allah prohibited and had done whatever Allah ordained."

And this, doing what is permitted and refraining from what is prohibited comes from the fear and awareness of Allah's presence. The means of obtaining taqwa is in our grasp and our ability; it is in our very homes, and it is what our arwah (souls) crave. The means of gaining taqwa, the fear of Allah, which leads to a more nourished and healthy ruh, which leads to a more obedient Muslim, which leads to refraining from all haram, which leads to striving to gain Allah's pleasure, which helps lead us to success, which will lead us to Jannah (Insha Allah) is the remembrance of Allah azzowajal, His dhikr, and it is the recitation of the Holy Qur'an, His very words. This is why the Prophet (sallallahu alaiyhi wa sallam) said, "Fear Allahit is the head of everything."

It is so easy to remember Allah and to glorify and praise Him, especially once we've reached this step. For example, when we are standing in line at the grocery store with all our goods--breads, cereals, drinks, sweets, nourishments, we should do tasbih--Subhannallah, Alhumdulillah, Allahu Abkar, and just speak to Allah in your heart and thank Him for His blessings. Simple. Remember Allah, praise Him, wherever you are, whatever you are doing.

Another means of gaining taqwa is the guidance of the Qur'an. Its greatness and its power, is only known to those who experience it and receive its guidance. Its words have the dynamic power that no other words could ever possess. It contains the very words of Allah. Imagine: holding the very sacred, holy, divine words of the only Supreme Being, the Only One worthy of being worshipped. What a blessing! We must keep a habit of reciting the Qur'an, even if it is just a few verses before heading to work or school, or if we cannot even do that, even listening to the tilawah, the recitation, of the Holy Book in the car is, itself, a beautiful experience. The words of the Qur'an are so powerful, it could make every hair on our bodies stand to the fear of Allah.

"Verily in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest." (Suratur-Ra'd 13:28)

The observance of salah, the one most important act of worship, in the eyes of Allah, is another means of gaining taqwa and closeness to Allah, if offered properly and regularly. It is the first thing we will be questioned about on the Day of Judgement. It is also one of the good deeds that will protect one from the torment of the grave. Salah is the heart of Islam and it is the heart of faith (iman). It saves us from evil and helps us lead a pure life. It expresses our gratitude to Allah for His mercy and His kindness. By our salah, we not only glorify and worship the Creator of all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth, but we seek His forgiveness through it. It is blessed and we are blessed to receive a type of worship that has the power to absolve us of our sins if offered regularly, properly, and sincerely.

To be included among the muttaqeen, those who have taqwa, we must refrain from all forbidden acts, all forbidden words, thoughts, feelings, and emotions, all forbidden celebrations and gatherings, which are places of fitna; we must refrain from those who practice and do what is forbidden and displeased by Allah and stick with the pious and righteous, who will help us make a habit of doing what is good and pleasing to Allah and help us refrain from what is sinful and displeasing to Allah.

In conclusion, from what Allah and His Messenger (sallallahu alaiyhi wa sallam) has outlined for us, we can see that a person who possesses taqwa is not one who lives an isolated life, only praying and fasting and maintaining good character alone. Instead, the muttaqeen are those who fear Allah and look to what Allah has ordained in the carrying out of his actions to avoid His

displeasure and anger. These are they who are involved with the strengthening of the Ummah, active in his or her life concerned with the affairs of the Muslims while, at the same time, keeping their duty to their Lord--praying, fasting, spending in Allah's cause, having good morals, behaviors, and characteristics. This is why the Prophet (sallallahu alaiyhi wa sallam) said fearing Allah is the head of everything. Without this, life is just life, the daily grind, a gradual process from life to death, but with the blessing of Islam, we could make our lives more than just life, more than just the daily grind, more than just a gradual process from life to death, by the guidance of the Most Glorious Book, the Holy Qur'an and by the Sunnah, the sayings and teachings of Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alaiyhi wa sallam).

The Prophet (sallallahu alaiyhi wa sallam) said, "The most common reason for people to enter Jannah is taqwa and good manners and the most common reason for people to enter the Hellfire is the mouth and the private part!" In his last khutbah, the Prophet (sallallahu alaiyhi wa sallam) said, "I ask you to fear Him, listen to Him, and obey."

"Truly, the muttaqeen will be amidst Gardens and water springs (Paradise)."
(Suratul Hijr 15:45)

May the Turner of hearts, turn our hearts towards His obedience. May He give us the towfique to change in order to fear and obey Him. Our Lord! Make us submissive to You and of our seed a nation submissive to You and show us our ways of worship and relent towards us, Lo! You, only You are the Relenting the Merciful (2:128). Our Lord! Cause not our hearts to go astray after You have guided us and bestow upon us mercy from Your presence. Lo! You, only You, are the Bestower. Our Lord! It is You, Who gathers mankind together on a Day in which there is no doubt (3:8-9). Our Lord! Lo! We believe; so forgive us our sins and guard us from the punishment of the fire (3:16)! Ameen.

Fall in love with the Quran

Why don't we feel love for the Quran?

1. Inability:

It's distressing to see many people who still do not know atleast a letter in Arabic. They do not know

how to recite the Quran and some haven't known what Quran is all about. They feel this as an inability and even if they are asked to learn it, they don't desire to go or they don't have an interest to learn the Quran. May Allah give hidayat to all

2. Unfamiliarity:

One of the main thing people say is that they aren't familiar with the language Arabic and that's why they don't feel an attachment towards it, but we can't repeat the same excuse nowadays for we have ample of oppurtunities and resources to learn more about the language and Allah has insisted in His Book that the reason He revealed it in Arabic is to make people easy to understand the Quran.

"Indeed, We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur'an that you might understand." [12:2]

3. Busyness:

The next main ingredient people say is that they don't have enough time to open and turn the pages. We do have time to have our meals, to iron our clothes, to sleep, to involve in our extra activities like hobbies and picnic. Then why can't we allocate a few minutes of our time for Quran?

4. Lame Excuses:

It's annoying to see people giving silly excuses to just get rid from this topic. Some says, "Oh, we recite it in salah and that's enough." Some says, "There's no problem with it for I am sure Allah will forgive me." and There are people who says, "If we can do good and avoid bad, then that's enough since there is no need to recite and spend our time with it as we have ample of works to do." and some are much frustrated and they say, "We aren't suitable to recite this Holy Book as we are sinners." These are silly excuses people make and talking like this can directly lead us to Jahannam. So be careful when talking. Don't control the situation by making up false statements. May Allah protect us all.

5. Different Perceptions:

If you look at the Quran as a most precious thing, then you will have a love for it, but in most cases, people just consider it as a Holy Book and keep it aside without realising the value of it. Some take the Quran and recite it with the intention of researching it. And some do it to make a comparison between other religious scriptures. Some recite it considering as just a deed. These are some of the ordinary ways people choose to see the texts in the Quran.

"And the Messenger (Muhammad SAW) will say: "O my Lord! Verily, my people deserted this Quran (neither listened to it, nor acted on its laws and orders)." [25:30]

What will be the outcome if we don't love the Quran?

1. Lacking in faith:

You won't feel closer to Allah. You will have a suspicious mind which will make you to act indecisively. Your Iman will swing and you will have a failed relationship with Allah.

2. Rigid Heart:

You will realise that you don't have a soft heart. You won't feel like to act with others politely. Arrogance will overpower you and Your heart won't tremble if you hear the word, 'Allah.'

3. Increase in bad deeds:

When you are involving in a sin, you won't feel it as a bad one. You will just console yourself that it isn't a mischief at all. You will have a habit of breaking promises, telling lies, disloyal to people etc. This will lead you to a pit of sins where you will no longer find any of your acts as a sin. May Allah save us all.

4. Decrease in good deeds:

There will be a gradual decrease in good deeds. You will miss the prayers and you will avoid the places where there is a good company. You will start to think everything as a burden.

5. Frustration:

All the above outcomes will lead you to frustration. You will always feel exasperated and disappointed. You will consider your studies as a burden or your job as a burden, your family as a burden. This means, Negativity will surround you and you won't have any affirmative thoughts at all.

"And We did not give Prophet Muhammad, knowledge of poetry, nor is it befitting for him. It is not but a message and a clear Qur'an, To warn whoever is alive and justify the word against the disbelievers." [36:69-70]

“And We send down of the Qur'an that which is healing and mercy for the believers, but it does not increase the wrongdoers except in loss." [17:82]

What can we do to fall in love with the Quran?

1. Think:

Take a good time and relax yourself. Think of your life and the hereafter. Think of your attachment you have for the Quran and Think what can you do in order to fall in love with it. Think of atleast allocating a few minutes of your time to have a glance on it.

2. Implement:

Implement of what you thought. Read atleast a page each day. If you find it difficult, Read atleast a few verses after each prayer which will be an easy start. Don't worry if you can't read for Rasoolullah said: “Verily the one who recites the Quran beautifully, smoothly, and precisely, he will be in the company of the noble and obedient angels. And as for the one who recites with difficulty, stammering or stumbling through its verses, then he will have TWICE that reward.” (Bukhari & Muslim) So start from today itself.

3. Understand:

Just reciting isn't enough. You need to know of what you are reciting. If you are good at Arabic, then it's okay. But if you aren't good at it, Pick a translation of your favourable language and have it at your side when reciting. Do you like to read a book of an unfamiliar language? It will be hard for you to concentrate and you won't find it interesting at all. So try to understand of what you are reciting as it is a key factor to increase your love for the Quran. (If you want to understand Quran, just click on this link and you will find what you want for just 10 dollars: http://www.ummaland.com/course/info/id_19/ )

4. Engage Your senses:

Engage your senses in exploring the contents of the Quran. Feel when you read and ponder over the verses. You should have a feeling of trembling when you are coming across the verses of warnings, happy when you read the verses of glad tidings and mourn when you hear about the torments. In this way, If you can feel the Quran, then you will fall more in love with it.

5. Search and Search:

Once you are experiencing a difference, go ahead and search for more facts from the Quran. The more you search, the more beautiful and inspiring verses you will come across. Jot down the verses and your thoughts if necessary. You will soon learn how Quran wisely holds the truth and will fall in love with it without knowing yourself.

6. Memorise:

Memorise the verses which interest you. The more you memorise, the more you will get interested with the verses and it will eventually induce you to memorise the whole Quran.

“And We have certainly made the Qur'an easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?" [54: 17]

7. Include in your prayers:

You can recite the verses you memorised in your daily 5 times of prayers. You can also include the verses in your supplications. This will boost you to learn more from the Quran and you will deeply admire as time goes by.

8. Never consider the Quran as a book of prayer:

If you view the Quran as just a book of prayer, your love will be limited and it will be based upon selfishness cause you are only considering it as a prayer. So observe the quran in different angels like: Quran as a book of prayer, Quran as a book of guidance, Quran as a book of justice, Quran as a book of legislation, Quran as a book of science etc. The more you observe it in different perspectives, the more you will fall in love with it.

9. Live by the Quran:

All the above facts will be useless if you are not living by the Quran. So take every advices it provide, tips that motivate, words that inspire, skills that help and Warnings that will lead you to the correct course. Take these all within you and live by the Quran. Start to act as a walking Quran like Rasoolullah did. It will be hard to act as said, but you can atleast give a try and do your best so that you will improve.

Ayesha (R.A) was asked about the character of the Prophet (SAWS) to which she replied: “His character was the Quran” (Bukhari)

10. Strengthen your faith:

Strengthen your faith by remembering Allah often for faith is where love comes from. The deeper your faith, the deeper you will be in love with the Quran. So be steadfast in your faith and feel the difference.

"Say (O Muhammad SAW) Ruh-ul-Qudus [Jibrael (Gabriel)] has brought it (the Quran) down from your Lord with truth, that it may make firm and strengthen (the Faith of) those who believe and as a guidance and glad tidings to those who have submitted (to Allah as Muslims)." [16:102]

How to know that we are in love with the Quran?

1. Attachment to Allah:

You will have a feeling that Allah is so close to you. You will sense His presence and it will gradually develop your closeness to Allah.

2. Development in Personality:

Your individual traits will reflect positivity and there will be a great improvement in your character.

3. Contentment and Peace:

You will be happy and satisfied with what you are. Tranquility will surround you and you will be ease at heart.

4. Encourage good and forbid evil:

You will be conscious of without falling into a pit of sin and will encourage yourself to involve in good deeds. You will do the same when you come across a person; You will avoid him from doing sins and will motivate him to perform good deeds.

5. Self-confidence:

You will be full of hope and even if you didn't receive of what you have intended, you will still be hopeful of receiving its reward in the hereafter. You will attain success in everything you do. Even if you didn't get it instantly, you will see it in the latter part of your life or you will be sure that it will be hoarded to make you successful in the hereafter.
“Anyone who has learned the Quran and holds it lovingly in his heart will ‘value his nights when people are asleep, his days when people are given to excess, his grief when people are joyful, his weeping when people laugh, his silence when people chatter and his humility when people are arrogant’. In other words every moment of life will be precious to him, and he should therefore be ‘gentle’, never harsh nor quarrelsome, ‘nor one who makes a clamour in the market nor one who is quick to anger.”

Rasulullah s.a.w bersabda :

” Sesungguhnya seorang hamba yang bercakap sesuatu kalimah atau ayat tanpa mengetahui implikasi dan hukum percakapannya, maka kalimah itu boleh mencampakkannya di dalam Neraka lebih sejauh antara timur dan barat” ( Riwayat Al-Bukhari, bab Hifdz al-Lisan, 11/256 , no 2988)
